The Onion is the small, rounded bump to the left of Iceberg Lake and Bow Glacier Falls when seen from Bow Lake. It may be a small peak and an easy scramble, but the views along the way are absolutely spectacular! The Onion sits right on the edge of the Wapta Icefield, and an optional (longer) route allows you to circle around the backside, right along the edge of the icefield, before ascending to the summit! There aren't many scrambles where you can safely walk right next to an icefield, which is what makes The Onion extremely unique and special!
Foggy morning views along Bow Lake!
Our objective (The Onion) sees its reflection in Bow Lake!
After crossing the boulder, we continued along the well travelled trail to Bow Hut!
There are a couple boulder fields to cross along the way!
Eventually we left the trees, and continued up to the end of the valley. A few stream crossings later, and we found ourselves at the base of the scree slope leading up to the ridge, which had previously been guarded by cliffs. A nice scree trail led up this slope and then turned right, towards Bow Hut. You can continue to follow the trail for a direct route to The Onion, but we opted to leave the trail here, and continue ascending straight up towards the Wapta Icefield! Photo credit: Dad

St. Nicholas Peak towers high above!
So cool!
We needed to get across here, but there was too much water to cross...
...this snow provided a route, but we were careful as we glissaded down it, as we didn't know how thick it was, and the stream was flowing beneath!
Water spewing out of rocks!

I don't know why, but to me it looks like the water is rising up, rather than falling down...
Underneath the icefield!
We continued up right along-side the icefield!
Make sure to keep off it though!! Or you could fall through like this chunk of ice!
Some interesting rock to scramble up!

You don't get this kind of view everyday!
That's a lot of ice!
Mounts Rhondda, Habel, and Baker!
Two little specks amidst a sea of ice!
The edge of the Wapta Icefield, which feeds Iceberg Lake, Bow Glacier Falls, and finally Bow Lake! Portal Peak and Mount Thompson rise above! We easily followed along the edge of the icefield until this point, and then headed up along the ridge towards the summit of The Onion, which we had overshot!
What a view!

The beginning of the Crowfoot traverse is readily seen from this side! It begins by easily ascending the brown-coloured North Peak, followed by continuing along the ridge towards the North Summit, only to follow the wide gully (noticeable from this angle) down until a weakness appears in the cliff band!
The summit of Crowfoot (follow the ridge until the end) still lies a long ridge walk away after that! Hoping to do that soon!!
Mount Olive, St. Nicholas Peak, and Mount Gordon!
Mount Collie rises in the distance!

Kaitlyn descends through some small cliff bands on The Onion's south side!
Below the cliffs.
There are many different options on descent. Once to skier's right of the big cliff band (that guards the summit of The Onion), you can descend immediately through the little rock bands (as we did), or continue down the ridge farther to easier terrain. Once below, there are endless possibilities, with lots of interesting terrain to explore. We just route found our way in the general direction of Bow Hut.
As Shrek said, "Onions have layers!" Wonder if he named this mountain!? haha!
