With campsites having closed, and temperatures dropping as snow begins to fall, we had to figure out a way to "camp" in winter! After composing a set-up to sleep in our car (you'd be surprised how many little things you have to consider), we were off to the Rockies again! I wasn't sure what the snow levels would be like, but the forecast looked promising, and I decided that Lipalian Mountain should be an easy scramble to test the conditions, with the added bonus of being able to complete "The Pumpkin Traverse" (bagging Purple Mound and Unity Peak), if the conditions were in our favour!
Beautiful sunrise on Mount Victoria, from the Fish Creek parking lot where we spent the night!
Haddo and Aberdeen (center) lit up in the morning sun!
Looking back as we hike up the Temple Lodge access road towards the ski hill.
About 3.5km up the road, a little ways before the bottom of the chairlift, we chose this ski run to ascend.
Looking across the road from our chosen ski run.
When the run split, we took the left fork up the steeper, but more direct, blue. Photo credit: Dad
Hiking up the snowy ski run...There's almost enough snow to ski! :P
At the top of the slope, we rejoined with the green run, and followed it towards the top of the chairlift. Lipalian Mountain rises center-right.
The ski run curves to the left here, but not wanting to backtrack, we took a more direct route, straight up the treed slope ahead.
Hiking up the slope, almost to the ridge and the upper ski terminal!
From the terminal, we made our way to the bare ridge (far-right) to ascend to the upper bowl.
Ascending the ridge. Redoubt Mountain is left.
The upper bowl. We found a good trail angling right, up to the summit ridge.
Following the trail. It was super icy, but the slope was gentle enough that it didn't pose a problem.
On the summit ridge! Lipalian's summit is to the right.
Mount Temple dominates the view across the highway! Little Temple sits far below! PS. This has gotta be my favourite view I've ever seen of Temple!
Massive Mount Victoria rises center! To the left, Mount Lefroy rises above Aberdeen and Haddo, which rise above Sheol. Saddle Mountain (left) and Fairview Mountain (center) sit below.
Mount Hector looks like it's in the wrong mountain range, towering waaay above Whitehorn Mountain of the Lake Louise ski resort!
The rounded summit of Mount Niles peeks out (left) over Mount Daly's long ridge! Waputik Peak sits below, and Mount Balfour is the glaciated peak rising to the right.
AHH! The aliens are coming!! Incredible effect with the rays of sunlight scattered by the clouds!
Storm Mountain rises center, in the distance!
Mount Bell (left), with Panorama Ridge in the foreground (center), and Bident Mountain with Quadra Mountain rising behind (right)!
Moraine Lake can just barely be seen nestled in the Valley of Ten Peaks! Eight of ten are visible including (from left to right) Fay, Little, Bowlen, Tonsa, Perren, Allen, Tuzo, and Deltaform!
Uniquely green-coloured Island Lake below!
Mount Douglas (left) and Mount St. Bride (right) tower in the distance above a foreground comprised of Unity Peak and Purple Mound!
Protection Mountain (center-left)!
Mount Richardson, Pika Peak, and Ptarmigan Peak (left to right), all Kane scrambles, rise above Hidden Lake (center)!
Redoubt Mountain is quite impressive as well!
The two giants here are Hungabee Mountain (left) and Mount Lefroy (right)!
Mount Whyte and Mount Niblock (with Mount St. Piran below) rise above Lake Louise!
Here we have Mount Field with a snowy ridge leading to Wapta Mountain (left), followed by Mount Carnarvon towering center-left. Paget Peak and Mount Ogden stack up center, and the glaciated President and Vice President tower in the distance, above Bosworth!
Summit pano towards the incredible Lake Louise group!

My dad, between Mount Douglas and Mount St. Bride!
Summit register, only placed a couple weeks prior! There was a nasty wind, and my hands were freezing, so hopefully it's at least partially legible!
My dad saw a lake on his map, and we wanted to see if we could spot it from up here! We followed the ridge down to the south-east, and look what we found! Already frozen - shoulda brought the skates!
Time to see if we can complete The Pumpkin Traverse! Off to Purple Mound first!
